Star Athletes of Samsung 2017 Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards Announced Tonight!

 27 March 2018, Hong Kong: The results of the “Samsung 2017 Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards” (HKSSA) was announced at the Awards Presentation Ceremony this evening (27 March) at the Grand Hall of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC). Mr. Timothy FOK, GBS, JP, Honorary Member of International Olympic Committee and President of Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (the Federation), the Hon. LAU Kong Wah, JP, Secretary for Home Affairs of Home Affairs Bureau and Ms. ZHAO Yiyin, Vice- President & Head of IT and Mobile Communication Business of Samsung Electronics H.K. Company, Limited respectively delivered addresses at this “Hong Kong Sports Oscars” besides presenting awards to the winners. Other prestigious presenters included Mr. YANG Jian, Deputy Director, Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR, and the Hon. MA Fung Kwok, SBS, JP, Legislative Councilor (Sports, Performing Arts, Culture and Publication). Many senior Government officials, guests from the sports and entertainment sectors including Miss Juliette LOUIE, Champion of the 2017 Miss Hong Kong, and Miss Emily WONG, 2nd Runner-up of the 2017 Miss Hong Kong also attended this glamorous event. This was also the Annual Dinner of the Federation, our Member Associations all gathered together on this occasion to witness the Awards Presentation and celebrate the achievements of our athletes in the past year.

 

The Federation received a total of 133 nominations from 49 NSAs for this year’s Awards. Winners were selected through votings by the Judging Panel, the Sports Media, and the public. The results of the six categories were officially announced during the Ceremony.

 

NG On Yee (Billiard) got the highest votes among the eight athletes in the “Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards” and clinched the “Samsung Best of the Best Hong Kong Sports Stars Award” again after 2015. Other “Hong Kong Sports Stars” winners included LEE Wai Sze (Cycling) and YU Chui Yee (Sports for the Physically Disabled – Wheelchair Fencing) who were both on the list for the sixth-time; CHEUNG Ka Long (Fencing) and WONG Chun Ting (Table Tennis) won the Award for the second consecutive year. NG Mui Wui (Sports for the Intellectually Disabled – Table Tennis), Siobhan Bernadette HAUGHEY (Swimming) and HE Jianxin (Wushu) were debutants in this Award.

 

Hong Kong Cricket National Men’s Squad won the “Hong Kong Sports Stars Award for Team Only Sport” for the second time again after HKSSA 2006. For the “Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards for Team Event”, HK Table Tennis Mixed Doubles (WONG Chun Ting/ DOO Hoi Kem) and 2017 World Tenpin Bowling Championships Men’s Trios were the winners in this category. The Federation applauded all awardees and wished them every success in their future sporting endeavours.

 

President FOK mentioned in the Ceremony that “All attended nominees are well qualified to be awarded the “Hong Kong Sports Stars”, but only the best and most outstanding athletes will be awarded. Winning or not is a blade thin. Each of them who walked on the red carpet should be honored.”

 

Secretary for Home Affairs stated that the Hong Kong athletes have outstanding achievements and their overall performances have improved. Their excellent performance, gracefulness during competitions, determination, modest attitude have become the spotlight of the society. They are role models for teenagers, their influences are in people’s heart, bringing vitality and positive energy to Hong Kong. Tonight’s Ceremony is a suitable occasion to pay tribute to the contribution of Hong Kong athletes.

 

Being a new initiative, to increase the glamour of this “Hong Kong Sports Oscars”, all nominees and guests were formally attired and were arranged to walk through the red carpet upon their arrival.

LEE Wai Sze and WU Siu Hong were selected as the Best Dressed Female and Male Athletes respectively. Each of them were given 2 sets of round trip Economy Class air tickets from Hong Kong to any destination sponsored by Cathay Dragon. Besides, after the Ceremony, a Celebration Party of HKSSA presented by the Hong Kong Olympic Fans Club and SF&OC Athletes Committee was arranged for all nominees, their families and friends in the Foyer of HKCEC. They could share the joy of this special moment, celebrating their achievements and successes.
